Elementary (JK – Grade 3)

Kindergarten

The Kindergarten program at Kanata Academy is very unique. Even at a young age, we believe in the importance of structured academics. Students are encouraged to play, explore, and discover the world around them through specific guided lessons and activities. Between the ages of four and six students are at a very important stage of development, therefore, we believe in providing them with a solid foundation that will set them up for academic and social success in the future. Our students participate in a variety of educational activities that pertain to all key learning areas and levels of ability.

Fostering Social and Emotional Development

Social and emotional development is the base for all things in kindergarten. It is our responsibility as educators to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all of our students while teaching and guiding them on how to believe in their abilities and treat others with respect and courtesy. We teach students about proper manners, listening skills and how to follow directions, as well as being responsible, honest, loyal, and making good choices. We talk about helping others, being a caring individual, being a good friend, staying safe, and most importantly, how to love themselves as individuals.

Building Strong Foundations in Literacy and Numeracy

At Kanata Academy, literacy is at the heart of learning. Students develop skills in phonics, reading sight words, and writing letters and sentences. The program is individualized, ensuring every child progresses at their own pace, whether they’re learning their first letters or already reading. Our goal is for all students to leave kindergarten with strong reading abilities, giving them an advantage in Grade 1.

In Mathematics, students explore concepts like patterning, sorting, and numbers before advancing to addition, subtraction, geometry, and time. Hands-on tools and written activities provide a balanced approach, building confidence and understanding at an individualized pace.

Exploring Science, Social Studies, and The Arts

In Science, students engage in hands-on activities to explore topics like weather, seasons, life cycles, magnets, and simple machines. Through observation and experiments, they develop curiosity and critical thinking.

Social Studies focuses on families, communities, and the world. Students learn their phone number, where they live, and gain an appreciation for diverse family structures and cultures.

The Arts include performances for families throughout the year, fostering confidence and public speaking skills. In Visual Arts, students explore monthly themes and famous artists, creating their own inspired works through various techniques.

Primary (Grades 1-3)

The Primary program provides a strong foundation in reading, writing, spelling, math, the arts, and physical education. Small class sizes help students build essential skills and prepare for future learning challenges.
During these early grades, students develop self-discipline, responsibility, and respect for others in an environment that values learning and listening. While following the Ontario Curriculum, Kanata Academy emphasizes emotional, social, and physical development, forming good study habits and life skills.
